Now into my second week at a certain state government department, and it's totally rockin. Loads of hardware, the first thing I did was blow away Windows on a few PC's and install
Ubuntu. Luckily I brought along a copy of Dapper on the first day. They are using Novell Groupwise for their email system and I think file sharing but I only use the webmail interface. There's actually a
SOAP interface, and
Evolution has a plugin to use it but they don't have it enabled on the server. Boo hoo. Actually it's not so bad because at the moment there's not too many people involved.
They're using me to trial certain open source replacements for things like Citrix, and research stuff like which open source CMS to use. The great thing about this job is that people listen to what I have to say! If I make a suggestion it's taken seriously and acted on, not just "yeah that sounds great.." like my last job. This is a place where I can
really make things happen.
For the entire time I was at my last job, they were using a
public ip network range for 2 of their live networks. 192.2.0.0/16 and 192.1.0.0/16. I couldn't believe it when I first saw it. But that was like, 1.5 years before I left. Boss would blow his stack almost every time I brought it up, and yet would not act. Still wasn't fixed, there was still absolutely no intention of fixing when I left. Absolutely fucking amazing - they should work for
smellstra with that level of skill and commitment.
Fuck. That. Shit.
I feel sorry for the guys that are still left there. But fellas, there's a world away from where you are now! It's a better environment! and pays better too! Take the plunge, you won't regret it. You know who you are.
I've got a couple of other things I'm snarky about but that can wait. Namely
threats of consultancy and filthy fucking machine rooms. Need a camera (and legal advice?) for that one.
