ComStock data feeds and WebMail Checkers

I've been working at a company delivering financial data realtime to pagers and phones. This financial stuff is kinda interesting. Well actually it's interesting to have to learn sorta how it works :-) Jumping in the deep end is the only way to learn!

Getting excited about what could be done with KCheckGmail when it'd decided what to do about parsing! I think almost total integration might be possible. IE maybe even send new messages from a kde window! That might be going too far, but getting stuff lile a message list with snippets would be very cool.. alerts, what about a kaddressbook source?

KCheckGmail-0.1

Description:
KCheckGmail is a kicker applet to display how many email messages you have in your Gmail account.

In this release there is only basic functionality.

KCheckGmail requires KDE 3.2 or later. It is written in C++ so you will also need to have the QT and KDE devel packages installed.

Download:
Download from http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=14927

Installing KCheckGmail:
  1. cd kcheckgmail-0.1
  2. make -f Makefile.cvs
  3. ./configure
  4. make
  5. make install
That's it! KCheckGmail should now be in the Kicker's Applet menu.

Using KCheckGmail:
The first time you use KCheckGmail, click to open the configuration dialog, enter your username, password and the checking interval, and click ok. Assuming your username/password is correct, you will either get a standard google icon (meaning, 0 new messages) or a faded out icon with your message count. A single left click on the icon will open Gmail in KDEs default browser.

TODO:
  • Write a flex parser for the javascript returned from google. It will be possible to use this data to differentiate messages when an email arrives at the same time an email is read...
  • It would be nice, although not sure how possible at this stage, to have a KIO slave representation of gmail. Read your Gmail messages from konq?

KCheckGmail

Just finished a KDE Kicker applet to check your gmail account for the unread message count. I learnt a HEAP about KDE in the process.. and it's so easy it had me stumped several times :-) I mean, sometimes you are just used to things being complicated and when they're not, it's kinda confusing... in a way...

Oh yeah and I've all but got that job, they are checking references today.. trying to track down managers from my previous jobs still.. the recruitment guy says once this is done we should see an offer the same day.. hope he's right...

Interview

Bloody hell what a nightmare! Went for the development job interview this morning, was running a bit late so caught a taxi. BIG mistake! I asked $20 enough to get there? "yeah moite, no problem". We are 7km away from where I'm supposed to be when the meter hits $20 and on top of that I have to give the guy an extra $3 for crossing the bridge! That was the bus money to get home! and I've got 30 minutes to be there! shit!

It takes 45 minutes to walk/run there, I'm 15 minutes late but I called so it's cool (well, better than if I didnt call). The actual interview is excellent... I think they like me and they have some cool sounding gizmos, they said I'm actually a candidate for 2 positions, the contract and an r&d role.. sweeeeeet...! maybe after the contract finishes? :D Oh yeah it's a great feeling!
